National Iwo Jima Memorial

Dedicated February 23, 1995, on the 50th anniversary of the historic flag raising, this nearly 40-foot tall bronze sculpture by Joseph Petrovics is the only Iwo Jima memorial in the world containing actual volcanic sand from Iwo Jima beaches incorporated into the concrete base. Rocks from Mt. Suribachi sit at the figures' feet, and names of 100 Connecticut men killed at Iwo Jima are inscribed on black granite panels. The memorial flies a historically accurate 48-star flag.
